It has been my experience that my GP Dr.Alan Williams finds time to listen, advise and discuss each condition I present with. I have never felt rushed, despite the fact that I am aware of the time constraints and work load he has ahead of him. I both trust and respect his diagnosis and feel safe and contented with the care I receive. We shouldn’t blame individuals regardless of their role when the system imposed both on them and us falls short. Thanks to the introduction of the NHS, we are experiencing longer life spans and as such require use of the NHS throughout a much longer retirement. We in the U.K. take free health care for granted, but surely this cannot be the case indefinitely, after all the NHS was established to provide free health care at the point of need many decades ago, a time when people like us lived in poverty and squalor, a time we’ll before the advances in medicine that we have become accustomed. Advances in medicine and an ageing population, result in additional costs to health care. Receptionists are the people who are patient facing and have to say ’no’. No one likes to be told no, especially when we feel ill or that we have the right to something, so what do we do we criticise the very people who keep the surgery functioning. It’s the system which is out of date for the demands we impose on it, not those who work it.

Suggested improvements
My only moan is that if you are unable to sit with your finger on the call button at 8.29 and 40 seconds then you will be number ‘don’t bother’ and need to repeat the process daily. This maybe ok if you are unemployed but if you work or have a debilitating condition appointments are filled before you can ring. With regard to prescriptions. If a medication change takes place the new medication will be due at a different time to the rest. This means 2 trips for the patient or 2 deliveries for the chemist and maybe just a day or 2 apart. It would be helpful if a part scrip could be given for the number of tablets required so all meds are due at same time. Better for the environment, the patient and release pharmacy staff enabling them to carry out other tasks.
