Phone line always busy and if you are lucky enough to get through you can only get a telephone appointment with a doctor. I have managed this a couple of times but the first call back was much earlier than I was expecting and the second an hour and half later, which is not acceptable when you have other things to attend to! Also I don't like the lack of privacy when you have to discuss your symptoms etc. over the phone, as there always seems to be someone around who can hear. I had to phone back for test results which luckily were OK according to the receptionist but I still have the problem and can only get another telephone appointment when I think a doctor should SEE my symptoms!!! So where do I go from here??? The system IN THEORY seems ok, to ease the workload which I appreciate is very high but it just does not work for the patients.

Response from St Thomas Road Health Centre

The appointment system has been “tweaked” many times over the past twelve months to try and improve it for both the patients and the Doctors. After their recent strategy meeting where the comments from the friends and family test were taken into consideration the Partners have once again made some changes to the appointment system. There are now some telephone triage appointments and “face to face “consultations available, when you phone for an appointment the receptionist will ask you some questions in order to make sure you see/speak to the relevant clinician you do not have to give personal information. Please be aware that depending on the problem you may need to see either a nurse, Minor illness clinic, Clinical Practitioner or Doctor. The more information you give the easier it will be to direct you to the appropriate clinician. Patients who do not wish to give any information to the receptionist will be offered a telephone consultation. Receptionists will only be able to book a “Face to Face” consultation when they are given the relevant information to determine which clinic is appropriate. Whilst the majority are bookable on the day there are a number of telephone triage appointments that can be pre booked up to two weeks in advance either over the phone or on line. You must register at reception for on line services please bring in photographic ID with you.
