I find it very difficult to actually get an appointment due to the same day access to appointments and the limited pre-bookable slots are often booked up to 2 weeks in advance as I have young children of school age and am not able to wait outside the surgery prior to opening time to get an appointment (due to the school run) and i'm often re-dialling the phone 30/40/60 min's as the lines are engaged. Having discussed this issue with one of the GP partners I do understand that the surgery are managing appointment access in the best way for the majority of patients and that no system is perfect however this way seems to work best overall compared to alternatives. Once i'm able to get through the call is answered pretty quickly and the call handlers are very polite and helpful even if there are no appointments left for the day this is explained very well and directed to a walk in clinic or to call back the next day. Also once seen by the GP or nurses at the surgery I feel like they give me more than enough time to explain the problem and to discuss through the next steps should that be a referral or any treatment plan. I never mind waiting if the appointment is running late as I know once its my turn to be seen I am never rushed and always given enough time even if that will delay the next persons appointment. I also find the GP's to be very patient centred and they certainly know how to talk with rather than at their patients, quite a skill! I fell privileged being a patient at Mayfield as I know from the experience's of friends and family at other GP practices ours is by far one of the better ones and we are so very lucky to have the quality of service we do.
