It may be difficult to get through sometimes but when you do the service is excellent. I have never not been able to get an appointment when I needed one. The doctors and nurses and support staff are mostly all wonderful. It is a shame that the GP service is so clogged with people thinking they need antibiotics when they do not. Usually your own body can fight these things if you give it a chance. Get out and get some fresh air, eat well, drink plenty of water and get on with it. Most of us just don't need them. Why do people feel the need to complain so much. This is a free service not available anywhere else in the world which is under a huge amount of pressure. What would you do without it ? Support the NHS don't slate it !

Response from Fakenham Medical Practice

Thank you for your feedback. On the matter of getting through to the surgery by phone in February 2016 a number of long awaited changes to the telephone system at the practice were introduced. As well as increasing the number of dedicated incoming lines for patients the automated attendant has been configured to allow call queuing on the main surgery number 01328 851321. Callers are offered four options:- press 1 to use the automated system to book, cancel or amend a GP appointment , press 2 to speak to a receptionist to book cancel or amend an appointment, press 3 to speak to a member of the dispensary team, or press four for all other enquiries. If the option is busy callers will automatically be placed in a queue for the option they have selected and be informed at regular intervals of their position in that queue. Patients are requested to call for test results using option 4 after 11 a.m. when the lines are less busy.

Since the practice introduced the automated telephone service it is impossible to get through to make an appointment, not just on Monday mornings but any time of any day. I have had to travel to the surgery personally to make my appointment which is then three weeks hence. I find this totally unacceptable.

In February 2016 a number of long awaited changes to the telephone system at the practice were introduced. As well as increasing the number of dedicated incoming lines for patients from 4 - 6 the automated attendant has been configured to allow call queuing on the main surgery number 01328 851321. Callers are offered four options:- press 1 to use the automated system to book, cancel or amend a GP appointment , press 2 to speak to a receptionist to book cancel or amend an appointment, press 3 to speak to a member of the dispensary team, or press four for all other enquiries. We do hope that you will find these changes to the system improves your ability to make an appointment. There is also an online facility to book an appointment with your own GP but you first need to register with the practice for a User Name and password.

I had a sore throat and phoned for an appointment. I was told a nurse would ring in the next hour. When she phone she was blunt rude and acted like she didnt care. She asked if i white spots on my throat to which i said no but its really red. I think i may have the start of a throat infection i said. Well unless you have white spots on your throat there is nothing we can do!! Needless to say it was friday and by sunday i had a huge throat infection which then was passed to my wife and children. They had a week off of school. By the time i rang on monday all i got was sorry we have nothing for two weeks!! That nurse has a bit of power and it goes to her head. Needless to say i took the risk and bought antibiotics off of the internet which thankfully cleared it up. If people are ill they need to see a doctor not go through a nurse first.

We do apologise that you had what appears to have been an unacceptable experience. If this ever happens again please ask for the nurse's name and contact the practice manager by phone or in writing and report what has occurred. She will investigate your complaint, take any action which is necessary to prevent a re-occurrence and respond to you within 10 working days. You are free to do what ever you wish but taking antibiotics purchased on the internet can lead to serious consequences not only for your own health but also for that of others. We have on average 80 calls within the first two hours of any working day from patients wishing to be seen that day. These calls are taken by a fully trained nurse to assess the patient's condition and decide on the appropriate course of action be it to book an appointment with the Duty GP that day, issue self care advice, arrange for prescription to be issued or arrange for a home visit or any other action as is necessary for the patient's health.

My daughter fell ill on Christmas Eve and after being triaged over the telephone, we were offered an appointment and my daughter was seen promptly. All staff are friendly and attentive and the level of care that we have received as a family over the years has always met my expectations. I would highly recommend this practice.
