Dr Shah is very helpful and professional. However I am never seen on time and waiting time can be at least 20 mins.

5th November 2014

My 11-week old son was ill on the morning of Wednesday 5th November 2014, having not fed from 7:00am that morning and his character was completely different to his normal happy self. I called the surgery at 10:58am and was given an appointment for 5:40pm the same day. At lunchtime I was even more concerned about the health of my son and decided to again call the surgery (at 12:25pm) to see if an earlier appointment was available, and was offered a 3:30pm 'we will see if we can squeeze you in' appointment. Not satisfied with this I proceeded to call the NHS Direct service, and the advisors at NHS Direct stated that I should immediately call my GP and get an appointment within the next 2 hours and that they would also send a referral to the doctor stating the same. When I called the surgery back I was told they were shut, the 3:30pm appointment was the earliest they could do, that there was no-one else who could see us, or (alternatively) I could go to the Brighton Station surgery (I don't know where that surgery is, I am not registered there, and getting there would not be easy with an ill 11-week old and 3-year old in tow). I managed to express my concerns to the receptionist that my 11-week old son had not fed and was highly irritable, and she spoke with the on-call doctor. The on-call doctor said to come in at 3:30pm, even though NHS Direct clearly stated an earlier appointment was necessary. If my son had continued to not feed this would have been 8 and 1/2 hours from his last feed - extremely out of character. Eventually, my husband and I decided that the health of our son was important, and the symptoms worrying enough, that we ignored the surgery completely and attended the Children's A&E at the Royal Alexandra Children's Hospital (in Brighton). Our son was promptly seen by the doctors at RACH who all expressed a lot of concern about his condition, and ultimately he was diagnosed with Viral Meningitis. Luckily, we acted quickly enough that the doctors at RACH saw and diagnosed him before the 3:30pm appointment would have even taken place, and he has now made a full recovery after three nights of being admitted to the Children's Ward. It should be noted that my other experiences with Carden Surgery / Dr Shah have generally been positive, but I do feel that the surgery let me down in my hour of need and the only time a life-threatening illness has affected my family to date.

I have been with the surgery for roughly 18 months, having been recommended it by a friend, having moved because I was deeply disatisfied with the general lack of care from many of the GPs at my previous surgery. The care provided by the GPs (and receptionists and nurses etc) at Carden Surgery is TRULY OUTSTANDING - they listen carefully, examine thoroughly, explain in layman's terms, clarify patiently, at the same time as being very kind and very human. Yes, the GPs tend to be a little behind schedule, but I want to wait to see them because I know that when it is my turn I will get the type of care I want - care that sets my mind at rest and means I don't have to keep coming back unnecessarily because they have dealt with me properly in the first place. Thank you Dr Shah and team for everything that you do.
