I'm sure humans are designed to have stomach acid. A doctor prescribed omeprazole for me for reflux - he did not try and work out why I had reflux, he just prescribed this so that the reflux would become alkaline. Still have reflux ! Surely he should have found out why I had reflux ? Stomach acid is essential for the breakdown of protein foods, for the absorption of certain minerals and vitamins, ie calcium and B12. It's also essential that the stomach contents are of sufficiently high acid when the contents are released into the duodenum so that the 'switch' in the pancreas releases enzymes for fat digestion. And stomach acid kills harmful bacteria - if these are not killed there can be bacterial overgrowth in the small intestine which can cause all sorts of problems.
