Mr Malek is reassuring and quietly confident. His philosophy is that you "listen to your body". I selected Mr Malek to carry out my hip operation because he practises "minimally invasive surgery". He explained that this involved a relatively small incision which appealed to me. Also, rather than stitches, he uses a thin metal strip covered by a dressing to seal the wound. This resulted in a scar less than five inches long. And, in fact, is hardly noticeable. Prior to the operation, the consultation with Mr Malek focussed on the problems I was having due to pain, discomfort and lack of flexibility. I had trouble getting my trousers on in the usual manner! He examined me and saw the lack of flexibility in my hip joint and, together with the x-ray, agreed that a replacement was necessary. The pre-operation medical was carried out with efficiency as was the Covid test. On Tuesday, the day of the operation, I arrived at the Nuffield at 4.00pm and settled into my room. The Staff were extremely helpful and accommodating. Prior to the operation, the anaesthetist spoke to me at length explaining what would happen. Later, I was prepared for theatre and my operation started at around 6.30pm. It was completed within the hour. Supper was served a little later. I was given pain killers on a regular basis and asked about the pain on a scale of 1 to 10. I was fortunate in so much as my pain level was nearly always 1 (or 2) at most. Eventually I found the pain relief unnecessary. The Staff monitored me regularly throughout. On Wednesday morning, after a hearty breakfast, Mr Malek visited me to inquire how I was. Around 9.30am, the physiotherapists came to see me and get me out of bed. They brought with them a Zimmer frame which they showed me how to use. Later in the day, they brought me two elbow crutches. I practised walking along the corridor with the physiotherapists by my side. They instilled confidence. On Thursday morning, Mr Malek visited again to inquire about my progress and, later in the morning, the physiotherapists called in. This time they concentrated on me getting up and down stairs using the crutches so that I could access the bathroom in my own house. Later on Thursday afternoon, having satisfied the physiotherapists as to my competence using the crutches, I was allowed to go home. I was in the Nuffield for a total of 47 hours. Since then, my recovery has been extremely good and walking has become painless and so much easier. Putting on my trousers is no longer an issue. The physiotherapists gave me important exercises to do at home and I returned to see them twice. Each time they "tested" me to see how I was progressing and additional exercises were given to me. The treatment I received was first class from everyone involved at the Nuffield. Thank you.
