Following a fall on icy volcanic rock while on vacation in Iceland last November when my left knee took the full impact of the fall, I had been suffering from acute pain on the inside of me left knee. I experienced pain and discomfort only at times, so decided to try and live with it for the next three months. In February this year when the pain episodes increased in frequency with significant swelling of the knee joint, I decided to see my GP who referred me to Mr Zameer Shah for consultation at the BMI Blackheath Hospital. I was early, as always, for my appointment and while waiting outside his consulting room noticed the very good rapport he had with all his patients. This made me feel very relaxed. After the consultation which was very informative Mr Shah referred me for an Xray and MRI scan which was conducted the same afternoon. The MRI scan revealed significant medial meniscus tear in the posterior horn with severe maceration. The scan also revealed 'stage 4' deterioration of the anterior body with marked loss of cartilage in the medial compartment. Mr Shah explained very clearly of the various treatment options and outcomes that could be expected. I chose to have an initial less invasive investigative and exploratory arthroscopic procedure. Now, six weeks post surgery the wounds have healed well, I have a good range of movements and most of the symptoms have eased. For the first five weeks I took paracetamol in decreasing doses to control the aching on the inside of my left knee. For the past three days I have managed to get around and walk comfortably and do my physio exercises with ease without taking any paracetamol. I am a 65 years old male who is overweight and realise that in time I may require a partial knee replacement due to arthritic degeneration of my knee joint. My Zameer Shah has given my knee joint a new lease of life. He is an exemplary surgeon and quite simply a very decent human being. His PA, Ms Aamira Chishti, has been very efficient and professional throughout this treatment programme. I am also very grateful to the excellent team at BMI Blackheath Hospital, including the anaesthetist Mr Beenu Madhavan. I have no constructive suggestions to make about any improvements, but would just like to add "keep up this excellent work you are doing Mr Zameer Shah and his team".
