My research found many surgeons offering hernia repair. Toby's colorectal experience and impressive research history made me confident that he knew his stuff (and what/where to avoid!). I felt he was old enough to have valuable experience but young enough to be at the forefront with the latest techniques. During phone and in-person consultation he was very open and easy (despite the practical complications of Covid-19), providing the information I needed, with pros and cons, to choose between the alternatives. His keyhole experience was relevant (but this involves general anaesthesia and overnight stay) - I chose open surgery under local anaesthetic. I gather this is still a bit unusual but I am so glad I did. I arrived at the hospital at 7am and was first on the list. The atmosphere in the theatre was very relaxing; I was given a mild sedative and actually slept through the procedure! Not having had a general anaesthetic I was home and eating lunch by 2pm the same day. The local gradually wore off - I took paracetamol for 4 days (nothing stronger needed). At first movement was a little awkward, but I have had no infection or pain (just tiny tingling and occasional mild discomfort). As expected I had significant swelling and bruising (cue Smurf jokes!), which have now disappeared. Because glue (!) was used to seal the wound I had no stitches or clips to be removed. After 3 weeks (it could have been 2) I returned to see Toby and was signed off, but with an invitation to contact him via his oh-so-helpful and supportive secretary Sam, if necessary. I feel extremely lucky to have found a surgeon at the top of his game. If you ever need a hernia op, I would thoroughly recommend Tobias (Toby) Hammond.
