Dr Samuels is an excellent clinician, educator and mentor. I was very fortunate to work with him during my clinical fellowship in intensive care medicine with echocardiography and learnt a great deal from him. His broad and consistently up-to-date clinical skills and knowledge together with his enthusiasm to teach and supportive nature have inspired me and many other junior doctors to pursue careers in intensive care medicine. In addition to his impressive knowledge, Dr Samuels is a strong leader who works well with his team, has sound clinical judgement and is always approachable. He is a firm advocate of holistic care, and treats patients and relatives with respect, compassion and empathy, communicating clearly and openly about clinical progress, uncertainty and bad news. Dr Samuels has led a clinical fellowship in intensive care with echocardiography for several years and has succeeded in supporting numerous fellows through the accreditation processes. He is a knowledgeable, approachable and patient teacher. His ability to explain complex concepts with clarity, to adapt his explanations and style to suit his pupils, and his enthusiasm to support them to learn is commendable. His regular one-to-one practical instruction in echocardiography enabled me to quickly learn good techniques and recognise common pitfalls. Through his expert tutelage, I (and several other fellows) have been able to accredit in both focused intensive care echocardiography (FICE) and the more arduous British society of echocardiography level 1 qualifications within a year whilst also working on a busy intensive care unit. Indeed he is single-handedly responsible for mentoring over a quarter of trainees through the BSE level 1 qualification. These skills are undoubtedly enormously clinically valuable and would have been extremely challenging to attain without the expertise, patience and enthusiasm of Dr Samuels, not to mention the numerous additional personal hours that he has invested. Working with Dr Samuels has been a great pleasure. He is an inspirational mentor and excellent clinician. I hope to work with him again in the future.
