As an active 50 year old, I started to suffer considerable hip pain along with the onset of a noticeable limp. I was diagnosed with Avascular necrosis of the right hip and was referred to Mr Chana for a consultation and total hip replacement. During my initial consultation Mr Chana clearly explained the procedure and answered the questions raised. Surgery was booked at the ‘The Princess Margaret Hospital’ and was completed just prior to the Coronavirus lockdown in March 2020. The procedure went well, and I mobilised quickly. Due to the national lockdown, initial follow-ups were conducted by video call and Mr Chana was happy to be contacted directly with any questions or concerns. I was fully recovered by 12 weeks and able to regain my fitness needed for work. During my recovery period, I became aware that I was beginning to experience movement restrictions in the left hip. Subsequent investigation with Mr Chana identified that I had CAM impingement, anterior labral tear, an acetabular cyst and that weight bearing was becoming compromised, I therefore needed a total left hip replacement. Surgery was book again at ‘The Princess Margaret Hospital’ and completed in October 2020. The procedure went well, Mr Chana was able to keep the hip rotator cuff intact this time by performing a ‘piriformis-sparing approach’. This elevated pain levels initially but significantly reduced my recovery time. I was able to walk unaided at 2 weeks and was back to fitness needed for work at 8 weeks. The physiotherapist commented that at 7 weeks post-surgery that I was at a level equal to 12-14 weeks. I have complete faith in recommending Mr Chana and ‘The Princess Margaret Hospital’ – indeed a friend of mine has two hips that need replacement, the first is scheduled with him in February 2021 (lockdown permitting).
