The thought of a big operation, in my case, two replacement hips within six months of each other, is quite daunting. I had previously had three knee operations with one of them being at the Meriden hospital and as the care had been very good, I had no hesitation in making an appointment to see Mr Westerman to see if he could help me with my hip problems. Mr Westerman was extremely easy to talk to and explained the procedure in detail and within two weeks of my appointment with him I was admitted into hospital for the operation. The whole team made me feel as comfortable as possible especially the anaesthetist who talked me through the fact that I would not be having a general anaesthetic but instead would be having a spinal block which would allow me to be awake during the operation if I wanted to. I chose to be sedated and slept through the operation instead. Following the operation the nursing staff were fabulous and I was out of bed within a few hours with the physiotherapist visiting me the next morning to make sure I was mobile and to give me exercises to do once I was home. Six months later I went through the whole process again and in both cases I was extremely pleased with the end result. For both operations I was only in hospital for two nights and once home, I made sure I carried out the exercises given to me by the physiotherapist which ensured that by the time I visited Mr Westerman for my six week post op appointment, I was walking without pain in the hip which had been replaced. I would recommend Mr Westerman and his team to anyone having to go through this procedure as everyone involved made me feel as comfortable as possible, putting me at ease through the whole process.
