When we arrived at the Royal Free hospital from Northern Ireland, we were immediately struck by the friendliness of the staff within the hospital. When we entered the hospital, there was a volunteer at reception who directed us to the Department that we were looking for with a smile. We immediately felt very welcome. During my initial consultation with Mr Barod, my mind was put at ease that I would be well cared for. He gave me confidence from the outset that my surgery, although extremely serious would be very successful. He requested staff to look after his "Northern Ireland friend" and I immediately relaxed. He explained in great detail what the surgery would entail and when I asked him additional questions to help me to understand how the procedure would work, he drew a picture of exactly what he had to do. It helped me to understand what was ahead of me. I probably felt more relaxed as he reassured me that the worst part was over for me and it was his job to ensure that the surgery had a successful outcome. A weight was taken off my shoulders at this point. I had great support from the team at the Royal free throughout my initial consultation, pre op visits and eventually my surgery. Even on the morning of my surgery, Mr Barod and the team at the Urology Department kept my spirits up, through his upbeat laugh and his final comment to me that he would take great care of me and not to worry. I took his comments very seriously as he gave me confidence that all would be well throughout my surgery and afterwards. Surgery was a success and my wounds have been healing very well with no concerns to note. We would like to sincerely thank Mr Barod and his team as I continue to recover at home.
