I previously had breast cancer in 2011 and had a mastectomy /reconstruction with breast implant. This was done at the Royal Marsden Hospital in Chelsea London. I had chemotherapy and was given Tamoxifen tablets to take for 5 years. After two years of taking Tamoxifen I got Womb Cancer which is a side effect from Tamoxifen and was told I was one in 20,000 people to get it. Had to have a total hysterectomy/ ovaries and cervix removed too. Well one cancer is enough as I hadn’t even got over the first breast cancer but to get another that was medically induced was worse. In 2020 I presented myself again back at the Royal Marsden with a grossly swollen breast - (the breast that I had the cancer in) I was told that it was suspected BIA-ALCL. I did not know what this was and when I asked I was told to google it when I get home. I was then sent for an ultrasound which showed that the implant was ruptured as well as inflamed. An appointment was made to see my surgeon Mr Gui who originally did my breast surgery. After returning home that day, I Googled BIA-ALCL and to my alarm! - this is a rare form of Non-Hodgkins lymphoma blood cancer. I could not believe what I was reading and to also find out that this type of rare cancer is caused from the type of implant that was used inside me and was RECALLED last year 24th July 2019. I was in total shock to have had to find out this information myself and was disappointed and disgusted with the Royal Marsden. Anyway to try to keep my story short after my consultation with my surgeon Mr Gui who was only interested to offer me a partial capsulectomy which I refused and also refused any further treatment from him. By now I am well equipped with knowledge of what I need and that was an en-bloc total capsulectomy. I was told by a professor at Cambridge university that after all what I have been through and having cancer twice that I needed to be de-risked and need all of the implant and capsule surrounding it out. I now had to find a surgeon that could do this procedure but it was near on impossible to get one from the Royal Marsden as I was referred to two different surgeons but rejected as they were leaving or retiring. Well by now I’m devastated and worn out but after more research trying to find a specialist surgeon who has performed and en-block and knows about BIA-ALCL - I was recommended to see Mr Turton- well I can’t tell you enough how lovey this man is. He is extremely experienced in his field of Breast surgery and has extensive knowledge of BIA-ALCL. This is a very rare cancer and only 573 cases of BIA-ALCL worldwide and as of July 2019, there have been 59 confirmed reports in the UK. As you can imagine if this case turned out that I had this very rare cancer caused from my breast implant that was recalled I just don’t know how I would have coped . This would mean that I go into hospital with one cancer and literally come out with two cancers medically induced. Nonetheless I am extremely very happy now as Mr Turton performed the en-block total capsulectomy surgery with tremendous results. The outcome was absolutely great. I am so please that I had to go all the way to Leeds from London as was very hard to find someone as skilled as him even in London. He is one in a million and I can tell you he has put my mind at rest now and I can live my life in peace now because of him. He listened to my concerns and made me very relaxed and reassured. This man was sent from heaven as I could not have found anyone better! I highly recommended him. Thank you so much Mr Turton - you are blessed to have such skills!
