For many years I suffered with easy breathlessness and inability to breathe to my nose for any lengthy period, hence I snored and slept with my mouth open. I went to my GP many times and I was finally referred to Mr Dessouky at CUH. Initial consultation involved thorough examination of my nose and throat and he came to the conclusion I had an extremely deviated septum and hardly any air was coming out of my left nostril. Surgery was the only viable option and he further explained it with the use of a diagram and my patient notes (which I thought was very clever), he did not know as this stage I am a fellow clinician but It was nice to see his communication skills to lay people is very thorough. We went through risks and benefits of both septo and septorhinoplasty and organised for me to have a CT scan and pre-op without much delay, to my surprise within 3 months I was to have the surgery. I was very impressed and pleased. Surgery day came and Mr Dessouky had a pre-op discussion and photos were taken. I was having a septo-rhinoplasty and expressed my post-operative aim simply to be able to breathe better and for a straighter nose but by no means an "obvious nose job", I also preferred to have a closed procedure but left it to his clinical judgement. Once I came out of theatre Mr Dessouky visited me in the recovery room and I found out Mr Dessouky had spent extra time of his own accord trying to give me the best possible outcome. I was already very grateful for his care and attention. I had an anaesthetic complication (nothing to do with the nose surgery) and was admitted into hospital as I was unable to swallow or talk. Unfortunately Mr Dessouky was not made aware of this until I emailed him my thanks and he came during his lunch and spent time examining me and reassuring me that my neuropraxia will get better with time. He referred me to associated specialists and organised a consultant neurologist to visit me also. Mr Dessouky was not on site aside from this but he was very kind to email me every so often asking for updates and sending best wishes. 7 days after surgery I went to see Mr Dessouky in the outpatient department and I was due to have my nose plaster removed. He examined my throat and nose and when we took the plaster off we found my "line of reflection" was perfectly straight and although my nose was naturally still very swollen after surgery I immediately fell in love with it. He chased up what will be happening with my complication and I will be seeing him in 1 month for a follow up. I received operative photos which I requested and he was kind enough to send it via powerpoint presentation. 1 week later, my nose has reduced in swelling tremendously and I am in awe of how perfect he understood my wishes. I don't feel self conscious taking photos and my snoring is now non existent. Life changing. Its been a long journey and I have met many consultants in my line of work and I hands down do not know anyone who would go out of his way as much as Mr Dessouky did. He seemed to just understand my wishes and I genuinely think I hit the jackpot with my ENT consultant. I am very lucky to have had the pleasure of meeting Mr Dessouky and if there was any way I could show my appreciation more I would. God bless.
