Mr Stylianides has operated on me twice, the first time giving me a stoma and the second time successfully reversing it. The outcome of the initial surgery was unpredictable as I was under investigation for Chron's/appendicitis/lymphoma, but he made sure I understood the possible outcomes and I felt safe going into the surgery. He then had the ever fun job of telling me I had lymphoma which he handled very well, telling me as soon as he found out and made me feel cautiously optimistic about my possible outcomes. After 5 months of chemo I returned to him after a (false) positive end of treatment PET scan with me needing a surgical biopsy, and he was asked by me and my oncologist to perform the stoma reversal at the same time. He initially refused due to the small risk of failure which would be extremely bad if I needed further chemo, however changed his mind after an MDT meeting where they decided the risk of perforations after the reversal was too small to warrant not doing it yet. All the time I was in hospital he regularly came to see me and was always very cautious and watchful on my progress. I always knew his primary concern was my survival and his refusal to take unnecessary risks always made me feel safe even if I disagreed with his decision making on initially deciding to not reverse the stoma early as safety was his absolute concern. I notice that he spoke to me and my parents very differently, as he catered to our different needs, with my parents being very emotional and worrying whilst I like to know the biological details of what's going on. Particularly at the end of my treatment and once I was known to be in complete remission I felt he was very emotionally invested in me as a person rather than just a medical case, even though he was always so clinical and stern during my treatment, and I know he'll always wish he'd been the one to tell me I was in complete remission as my oncologist beat him to it by an hour.
