My problems started in September 2018 with a bad case of sciatica. Over the next 8 months there followed all sorts of treatments: acupuncture, Thai massage, chiropractic and many sessions of physiotherapy and osteopathy, none of which seemed to help, until a very experienced sports osteopath told me that I had almost certainly got a compressed disc and there would probably be little anyone could do for me via any sort of manipulation. I made a private appointment with Mr Rath in August 2019, he arranged an MRI scan (on the NHS) within a month and this confirmed that I did indeed have a bulging disc which was causing my pain by pressing on my sciatic nerve. At this point, I was able to manage my pain with regular paracetamol/ibuprofen and whilst I was able to do this, I didn’t feel the need for surgery. I lead a very active life, at 65 I was attending HIIT cardio, circuit training and weights classes 4 or 5 times a week and also ran 2 movement to music classes a week for senior ladies. I was worried that I may not be able to continue to do these things if I had surgery. My condition was regularly monitored over the telephone by Mr Rath’s clinic and a further MRI in February 2021 showed my condition was still about the same. This continued until July 2021 when I lifted a barbell awkwardly to move it and felt excruciating pain down my sciatic nerve which rendered me unable to do very much for a few weeks. I had tried a nerve root block at some point in my treatment plan which didn’t give me any relief and in August 2021 I had another MRI which showed my condition was now at the point where surgery would be beneficial and my operation was booked with Mr Rath to do an Endoscopic decompression and discectomy in February 2022, on the NHS. I was able to walk unaided immediately afterwards and had I not lived a 2-hour drive from the hospital, would have probably been able to go home the same day. I was very careful for the next few weeks where exercise was concerned and resumed more strenuous activities after 3 months. I am now 1 year and 4 months post op, have a much greater range of movement in my previously affected leg and am back to my full range of exercise classes, aged 69. I am very grateful to Mr Rath for his intervention. I felt very confident in Mr Rath’s ability to make me whole again, he listened to what I hoped to achieve as an outcome and reassured me that my quality of life should be greatly improved. I felt I mattered as a patient and could not have been happier with the care I received. I would urge anyone with a similar condition to take the plunge and place your trust in Mr Rath, you will not be disappointed! Now if only Mr Rath did knees………..
