I went to Barrow hospital on Xmas eve at 4.30 for a prostate biopsy. I was naturally very nervous about the procedure and expected, indeed had been told I would have, a consultation prior to the biopsy, after which I would decide whether to proceed. However the attitude from the doctor was basically that I had no real choice. The procedure was excruciatingly painful and extremely stressful, to the point where I was literally in tears for some time afterwards. No one had explained how bad it was likely to be. Following the procedure I was told to expect “some blood” when passing water. I was totally unprepared for the amount of blood and blood clots which were brushed aside by the staff as “normal”. If this was normal I would have expected to have been warned. I was told that I should get results after about 14 days. But was not told how this would be done. Today, 4th January (11 days after the procedure) I received a letter from the hospital. Thinking it was the results I was nervous to open it. It was a shock when I found it was just a standard letter basically just informing me that the procedure had taken place and again stating that the doctor would review the findings in about two weeks Whilst I understand that it was the Xmas period and everyone was keen to get away for their break, I would have expected a standard letter like this to have been sent the same day as the procedure. However, this was not even typed until 30th December, some six days after, and then according to the postmark, not posted until 2nd January, and then, by second class post!! I am now very dubious about going ahead with any treatment recommended. So far not impressed. Not impressed at all
