Full disclosure: I used to work as a Chronic Pain Specialist but retired from this 18 months ago. I currently work at Wrightington Hospital.
When I started developing anterior right shoulder pain, especially worse when bench pressing at the Gym, I thought an old injury was playing up. I consulted Professor Funk privately at the Arm Clinic because of his reputation and speed of access. I also researched my condition online beforehand and came across his excellent website "shoulderdoc" which filled me with confidence that he was up to date and well informed in his speciality. Within minutes of my consultation he was able to diagnose arthritis in my acromioclavicular joint. A swift cortisone and local anaesthetic injection, followed by immediate relief, confirmed the diagnosis. Later that evening my shoulder felt really sore as the local wore off but I had been warned about this. After a couple of days my shoulder felt better once the steroid kicked in and I was able to return to the Gym within a week.
The benefits of the injection lasted about 6 months before my pain returned. I managed to see Professor Funk again at this time and he was able to offer a 2nd injection. The same after effects occurred but this time the benefit from the injection has lasted 12months and is still ongoing. Admittedly I am not as active at the Gym as I used to be but I can sleep better now!
Professor Funk is a colleague at Wrightington who took time out to treat me with professionalism and courtesy. He listened and examined at the same time and seemed to know from my description the cause of my pain. Overall it seemed the assessment took no time but the diagnosis was accurate and the treatment offered immediately. I used to need regular anti-inflammatory drugs to help me sleep but I am now off these altogether.
I was seen at the HCA hospital in Wilmslow. This is a very modern facility with welcoming and attentive staff. I would thoroughly recommend both Professor Funk and the HCA hospital to anyone with a shoulder problem.
