After my second child, my stomach muscles split badly and I underwent a period of physio, and then regular pilates. Despite being fit and active - running half marathons and doing a lot of cycling - my core stability was poor and I never managed to achieve what I felt I should in terms of abdominal strength. The shape of my stomach and amount of excess skin was also frustrating, and no amount of exercise seemed to help. For a number of years I felt I couldn't justify having surgery, but as my back pain continued and my dissatisfaction with the ability to keep my body functioning well also continued, I decided to bite the bullet and book a consultation to discuss my options. I did extensive research to find a surgeon I felt I could trust, and after reading a number of reviews, booked an appointment with Mr Lohn. From the first appointment I felt Mr Lohn really took the time to listen to me and my individual circumstances, and understand what my concerns were. He asked really careful and considered questions about my lifestyle and what I was hoping to achieve, and then gave me clear and realistic information about my options and what was involved in each case. I particularly valued the fact that Mr Lohn considered my family situation and that he involved my husband in the process from the outset. He was very clear about potential complications of the surgery, and didn't downplay either the extensiveness of the surgery or the recovery. I decided to go ahead with a full abdominoplasty and muscle repair, and could not fault the lead up to the surgery, the day itself, or the aftercare. Both Alix and Mr Lohn were fantastic, and I felt safe, reassured, and absolutely confident that I was making the right decision. I left hospital after one night with no significant problems and recovered well. Unfortunately, just over two weeks after surgery I developed symptoms of a Pulmonary Embolism, a relatively rare complication that Mr Lohn had spoken to me about in the lead up to surgery. Despite doing everything "right" after surgery, I was just one of the unfortunate small percentage of people who develop a blood clot. The reason I am including it in my review is because the care shown by both Alix and Mr Lohn during and after this happened was really exemplary. Mr Lohn made regular calls to my husband to check on my progress, and even came to visit me in hospital which I felt showed a level of care and kindness which really sets him apart as a brilliant doctor. He then gave me regular follow up appointments, referred me to an excellent respiratory consultant, and followed my progress until I was back to full health. Despite this unexpected and unfortunate side effect of the surgery, I have fully recovered and am absolutely delighted with my results. The recovery from the surgery itself, clots aside, couldn't have been smoother and my scar is neat, thin and low. I would still make the same decision to go ahead, even knowing the risk of blood clots. I can't recommend Mr Lohn highly enough, and as I said to him at my final appointment, I hope we don't have reason to meet again, but should I need surgery in the future, I certainly hope I could be under his care again.
