I was referred to Mr Bourne from my GP after seeing 3/4 other doctors who failed to correctly diagnose my leg and hip pain. After spending 5 minutes with him, he diagnosed me with a likely L4-L5 herniated disc. He then booked me in for an MRI scan which eventually shown the diagnosis to be correct. Mr Bourne then gave me the choice of surgery or cortisone injections after months of non-surgical treatments had failed to improve my symptoms. He explained the risks involved in the surgery but it was my final option as I couldn’t walk without the aid of crutches for 6 months! On the day of the surgery I was put in my own private room with a TV, I almost forgot I was about to get surgery! Mr Bourne came in to explain the procedure and draw markings on my back. At around 5pm I was taken down to the pre-op room and given the anaesthetic. I woke up and felt immediate pain relief. Mr Bourne checked on me later and informed me the surgery was a success. I was discharged around 12pm the next day, walking! 3 months down the line I’m around 80% back to normal. I still feel a sharp sciatic pain if I move in a certain position but Mr Bourne said this could be due to scar tissue or still some damage to the nerve as it was pinched for half a year. I’m confident within a year i’ll be back to living my old active life. Mr Bourne made me feel comfortable and confident with having surgery through the whole process with his funny and straight to the point personality. I can’t recommend him enough. Not all heroes wear capes!

Response from Mr James Bourne

Thanks for the feedback. I'm really happy you are doing well. It is absolutely necessary to have an accurate diagnosis, time often makes this more obvious. Surgery isn't always the answer, but it can be of benefit in specific situations, and that should be determined with a surgeon. I'm glad the environment on the ward helped relax you prior to the op. It is a team effort, including administration, nursing staff, anaesthetist, theatre team and physio, who all do great work. I am sure you will continue to improve. Best wishes J
