Having been reviewed by Neurosurgeons in 2016 at age 64 years, for a number of symptoms, including burning sensation in lips and toes there was no clear indication of any need for surgery then. Over the last year or so symptoms had progressed to affecting my coordination and balance such that I was limited by pain in my back and legs, to walking only very short distances and with a rollator for balance. I could not shower on my own as closing my eyes affected my ability to stand without holding on to the rail with both hands. I was so pleased to be introduced to Mr Henry Budd who had my previous MRI's and history and was able to carry out a thorough review including X-Ray and then immediately demonstrate the evident progression and the need for surgery. He was able to take time to clearly and confidently inform me and discuss the risks and benefits and I knew that the progression of the condition needed to be stopped. On the day following the operation, there was of course discomfort at the site of the surgery, but it was managed well by Paracetamol. I knew that day that my gait and balance had already improved and continues to do so. I can now shower myself, walk confidently alone and after years of burning sensation in my lips and toes am no longer troubled by that. Throughout the event I was reassured by Mr Budd's knowledge and ability. I am pleased to see that at Exeter he is able to educate aspiring surgeons.
