I became a liver transplant patient in 2012. The operation was so successful that I led a fully active life on the minimum medication for years. In December 2021, whilst travelling in Mexico I badly fractured my right ankle in 3 places while stepping off a bus. I was taken to a well regarded local private hospital where I underwent surgery conducted by a well respected orthopaedic trauma surgeon. At the time the surgery seemed to have been successful. However, after a few weeks, it became apparent that my ankle was not properly aligned, furthermore, the anti-inflammatory drugs and pain killers I had been prescribed had an adverse effect on my liver which led ultimately to the formative stages of liver rejection. The pain and discomfort in my ankle persisted and by February it was clear that I needed urgent medical attention for both my liver and my ankle. I was admitted to the Royal Free Hospital on February 28th and was immediately placed in the care of the Liver Consultants Team. After a few days I was visited by members of Mr Mann's orthopaedic trauma team, who were very keen to assist with my ankle. They agreed that since the passage of time had been so long since my original surgery, any chance of repair would need to be undertaken by someone highly skilled who specialised in such complicated surgery. They reccomended that Mr Mann himself would be my best chance. Because my liver was still unstable, it took several weeks before I was considered strong enough to undergo further surgery. By the time I was considered fit enough so much time had elapsed since my original surgery even Mr Mann expressed some doubt as to any kind of successful outcome. However, he was so kind and patient that he listened to my pleas and went through any possible procedures in great detail before finally agreeing to go ahead. So on April 8th Mr Mann and his team operated on my ankle, emplying various screws, metal plates and fusion techniques. I'm delighted to say now in mid July that the entire operation was a great success. Despite not being able to move my foot directly up and down, which Mr. Mann had advised me would be the case, I am able to walk without the aid of crutches and my foot is now set in the correct position. I feel so fortunate to have been in Mr Mann's care. He is a truly gifted surgeon who shows great compassion and wise judgement A sincere human being of the highest calibre and a great credit to the medical profession.
