Having an operation on your eye can be a stressful experience, especially for older people who are suffering from cataracts and glaucoma. One is already experiencing the effects of vision loss and unsteadiness. This distrust of your ability to deal with everyday life can undermine your confidence and make you vulnerable. Dr. Ratnarajan is kind, has a warm smile, and genuinely cares for his patients and shares with us the remarkable event of renewed sight. He is gentle, efficient and takes command in the operating theatre which helps one endure this strange procedure and settle the nerves. The demand for surgery is however so great that one can be left with the imbalance of only having one eye "done' for 6-7 months as I have been told I will have to. One can adjust to many things, and there's no question that there is an improvement already with one eye done. But one could wish that people could be processed within the 2-3 month limit I was told I would have to wait when I received my first operation. This is not a reflection on Dr. Ratnarajan or his expertise but on our overwhelming need for NHS services.
