Dr Duminy is a highly-skilled and experienced plastics and reconstruction surgeon. I had the privilege of shadowing him as part of my training to become a doctor in South Africa. He was very accommodating and made my experience one that I will never forget. I have learnt so much from him and for that I am truly grateful. Dr Duminy is a warm, compassionate doctor that always managed to make patients feel comfortable. It was an absolute delight watching patients come in not feeling particularly great about themselves and eventually leaving with bright, wide-eyed smiles. He kept patients well-informed, addressing all questions and fears with the utmost patience and respect. He by no means imposed decisions onto patients, but instead allowed them to make an informed decision- autonomy being a key aspect of his practice. Dr Duminy has highly commendable communication skills- patients never felt judged or disrespected. He always listened attentively and tried his best to address the patient’s needs. He created a safe, friendly yet professional environment; one in which trust and confidentiality ensued. This ensured healthy doctor-patient relationships with all his patients I also had the privilege of being present with Dr Duminy in his in-house accredited theatre. The procedures performed by Dr Duminy were always done so meticulously. He is a confident and competent surgeon that always keeps himself informed with recent advancements in medicine, surgery and technology. This ensured that his patients received the best possible care, care that is evidence-based and up-to-date. All procedures were performed under conscious sedation which means that the patients were awake- just sedated. He always reassured and kept his patients informed, creating yet again a safe, supportive environment. Patients were followed up regularly and thus always felt supported by Dr Duminy who aims to make himself readily available and accessible to his patients. Dr Duminy prides himself in providing a health care service to better impact the lives of his patients. He is very passionate about his work and always strives to practice beneficence and non-maleficence. As a medical student soon beginning my career, I have gained invaluable knowledge, interpersonal skills as well as life lessons from Dr Duminy. Dr Duminy has become my role model. I admire his holistic, respectful approach to all his patients. I aspire to be a doctor just like him; a hardworking, supportive doctor, that truly cares and endeavors to provide the best possible care, to the best of his ability and knowledge.
