I had a bilateral arthroscopy of the TMJ which included disc repositioning. I was suffering from chronic pain in my jaw joint and following an MRI I was diagnosed with an arthritic jaw joint. Conservative treatment did not work. I had worse and better days but the pain never stopped, to the point that I was sleep deprived and fairly low in mood. Painkillers also seemed to have a limited effect, plus I did not want to be reliant on them. Mr Komath suggested the above surgery as well as an anterior repositioning splint and physiotherapy. At my 6 weeks check up the pain had not reduced much and I was suffering from facial weakness on the right hand side - I could not smile fully on that side. I was reassured that it was early days but if I did not improve I may have to repeat the surgery. I am now 3 months post op - the facial weakness has disappeared and the pain has significantly improved. I still get occasional pain but this tends to be helped by mouth exercises and massage, and I am generally almost pain free. I sleep and eat better, and I am not constantly tired. I was very ambivalent about having surgery but I am glad I did as it has improved my quality of life. I was worried about recovery and facial scarring, but the scarring is insignificant and pretty much invisible. Recovery has also been ok - I was not in great pain after the surgery, other than tightness around the area and the usual jaw pain I was getting before, which has now reduced. Mr Komath was trustworthy and patient, and in my case made the right call suggesting surgery.
