During a recent trip to the United Kingdom, I noticed a mild obstruction in my throat when swallowing. Following an unsatisfactory attendance at a general medical practice in Oswestry, it was suggested by a friend that I should consult with an ENT specialist at the Shropshire Nuffield Private Hospital. A week later I met with ENT Surgeon, Mr Churunal Hari who immediately performed an Endoscopy which revealed an exophytic lesion in the left tongue base. He then arranged an MRI and a biopsy which identified a Level 2 node on the left side and a poorly differentiated SCC which was P16 positive. In anticipation that I would want to return to Australia for treatment, Mr Hari arranged a referral to Dr Anthony Clifford at the Chris O’Brien Lifehouse in Sydney for the following week and provided me with the MRI scan and the pathology report as well as the block to give to Dr Clifford. Since returning home, I have undergone successful surgery by Professor Jonathon Clarke to whom I was subsequently referred by Dr Clifford. While no-one can accurately predict the future, my prognosis appears to be very good. I put this down to several factors but, for me, the most important will always be the early, skilled and thoughtful intervention of Mr Hari for whom I will be forever grateful.
