Mr Unnithan operated on my broken patella (knee cap) after I tripped on a pavement so I was admitted as a trauma patient. When I went into theatre I had no idea who would operate on my knee as I had only seen an ortho registrar in A&E. It was a very complicated break so screws and wire were used to repair it and the ligaments were sewn up. I was so fortunate Mr Unnithan was on duty as he is the most caring surgeon I have ever known - when I went back for my first check-up a week after the surgery he admitted he had been worried the previous evening in case it had not worked. He told me not to bend my knee more than 20 degrees but told me the importance of physiotherapy to avoid too much stiffness and loss of muscle. I first saw my physio after my stiches were taken out when I was given some exercises to keep the strength in the muscles in my leg/knee. On seeing my physio for exercises she also regularly massaged around my knee to reduce the swelling and loosen the muscles. I had my six month check recently and Mr Unnithan was very pleased with the way my knee had healed and the strength/mobility I have now so the physiotherapy has really paid off. I am extremely pleased too as there was a lot of doubt as to how mobile I would be after such a bad break. I really cannot recommend Mr Unnithan enough as he is not only a very good surgeon but has a lovely bedside manner and is very concerned with his patient’s welfare. He always tells you to contact him any time with any concerns or questions.
