I am aged 70. I have experienced intermittent pains in my lower back for over 55 years. In January 2019 the pain recurred, however this time I experienced sharp sciatica pains, numbness and pins and needles in both legs. The pain continued for two/three months despite taking anti-inflammatory pills. I underwent an MRI scan in May 2019, which showed I had a moderate to severe central canal stenosis. My GP recommended physiotherapy and I was given daily exercises and attended Pilates classes. For a short time my condition improved however as the year progressed I began to feel more and more unwell. I was taking paracetamol and ibruprofen daily however the pains and discomfort increased and I was becoming progressively more tired and drained on a daily basis. In early January 2020 I experienced extreme pain in my lower back for 48-72 hours. I was prescribed strong pain-killers by my GP. My quality of life was being severely impacted so I sought help from a specialist spinal consultant and was recommended to Professor Ranganathan. The professor reviewed my MRI scan and explained that I had a very severe and serious condition that required immediate surgery. I had a build up of ligament, which was pressing against my spinal chord and nerves and a prolapsed disc. The professor explained he would use keyhole surgery. He said the risks were minimal, however the most likely risk was a CSF leak caused by a tear to the dura. The operation took place at the Princess Grace Hospital. It transpired that a small tear did occur during the operation due to the pressure exerted by the stenosis. The spinal cord was 95% blocked. I had to lie on my back for 4 days to allow the dura tear to fully repair. I recovered from the 3½ operation quickly and was walking after 4½ days. I felt substantially better immediately after the operation and was almost pain free. Six weeks after the operation I am walking freely, able to bend with ease and will shortly start physiotherapy. I feel as though the operation has transformed my life. All staff at The Princess Grace Hospital were excellent, very caring and hugely supportive during my recovery. Professor Ranganathan checked my progress daily. I want to express incalculable thanks to Professor Ranganathan for his skills and the confidence and reassurance he provided. If anyone has a similar condition please call Professor Ranganathan. You will not be disappointed.
