Written by a patient
16th April 2018

Mr Khan and the colorectal team which supports him are, to my mind, probably the most efficient and sensitive team I have met. From the very outset he was candid but gentle in delivering what can be a shell shock diagnosis not only to the patient but also their families, who have to struggle with taking onboard this news. As soon as Mr. Khan provided the diagnosis (2012 tumour in the rectum) his team, led by Heather, just jumped into action: Phone call informing us of appointment dates. Meeting at the Hospital to explain about the dreaded "bag" and what to expect. Telling us how the radiotherapy ahead of surgery was used and why. When I had my operation Mr. Khan came around in the morning alongside Heather, talked through how I would feel after etc (this was 8am in the morning). I had my surgery and that evening at 8pm possibly later, Mr. Khan appeared again - cool, calm and collected just to check I was ok. 15 months later, back in for a reversal (to reconnect the bowel and dispense with the bag). Same incredible care and flow of information and now, almost six years later, I am in great shape and today, 16th April, signed of by the most gentle of gentlemen, Mr. Khan. To individuals who are diagnosed and families who are taken into the care of this wonderful team, all I can say is trust them, let them get on with what they do best and they will continually have you at the heart of everything they do. You truly feel as if you are the only patient they have - that truly is a gift. Ian
