Written by a NHS patient
6th April 2022

I am 74. I had two hip replacements, in January 2020 and June 2021, both by Mr Malhi, and both with excellent results. He is obviously a very good surgeon, and was always happy to discuss details or problems. The only comment I would make does not relate to Mr Malhi. The patient experience at Guy's was very much better than that at Blackheath Hospital, where I had the second operation. Being in a busy NHS ward, with others to talk to and a constant to and fro of carers, was so much preferable to being in a private room, having to ring for attention and with no-one to talk to. For example: when my urine bottle was full I rang for help, but it took ten minutes, by which time it was too late! I was asked to return the crutches I had paid for, as I had said I already had an NHS pair; I had to wait two hours, with no explanation, for the senior nurse to come and discharge me; and no-one enquired as to how I could arrange transport to get home. Nothing like that happened at Guy's, where the care was first-rate in every respect.
