Less than 24 hours after a cardiac arrest, I was in Preston Royal Infirmary facing a triple bypass operation. Before this, I didn’t know I had a heart problem, had never been in hospital and was terrified. I was expecting to meet Mr Bose at his Outpatients Clinic there, but he took the trouble to come up to the Cardiac Unit to see me. I was in total panic, but Mr Bose has a wonderful smile and calm confidence which was very reassuring. He answered my questions in a way that I could understand. Between deciding to go ahead, and the surgery itself at Blackpool Victoria Hospital a week later, I was surprisingly calm ~ mostly because of Mr Bose’s manner. The operation went well; Mr Bose saved my life. When he visited me on the ward afterwards, his caring manner was evident, and it was obvious that he enjoys his work. At my follow-up appointment, I wanted to ask something specific about the way my particular procedure was done. The Registrar phoned Mr Bose, who, towards the end of what must have been a busy day for him, was happy to come to talk to me. He brought up my pre-op angiogram on the screen and spent about a quarter of an hour explaining, again with a smile, exactly what he’d done to correct my problems. Mr Bose is a lovely person as well as a highly skilled cardiac surgeon. Ellie Judson
