I am so grateful that my GP originally suggested I saw Adrian Fairbank. Her words were 'if there is any chance that you can be seen by Mr Fairbank - grab it. He is the best'. Wise words. I was an expat living in the Middle East, and the considerable damage caused by an accident 20+ years ago, was getting progressively painful. Mr Fairbank and his secretary achieved miracles to have me seen, scanned, followed by a lightening quick arthroscopy and meniscus op. I flew back only a week later than scheduled. I had lived for years with the knowledge that I would need an early replacement, and from then onwards was monitored by Mr Fairbank. He said that the knee was damaged beyond repair, and replacement the only solution. With hindsight I am so grateful that he didn't suggest lots of short term measures or procedures that would not have made a significant difference. He told it exactly as it was, explained my scans and Xrays and didn't try to sell me any quick fixes. As expected, my knee deteriorated and my quality of life reduced as a result. Finally the disablement and pain was unacceptable. As always Mr Fairbank explained in infinite detail what was happening inside my knee and booked me in immediately for TKR. The procedure was relatively painless, my care was superb and at all times I really felt as though Mr F and the whole team, cared about me and my recovery personally. I never felt like 'just one more patient'. Even with an unavoidable but disappointing setback at 7 weeks (again painstakingly examined, explained and treated), my progress was good. Adrian Fairbank is an ultimate professional, but has a calm and pleasant manner. He does not have an ego the size of a planet - and is approachable and happy to explain complex matters in straightforward terms. He never tries to confuse you with jargon or is dismissive. Regularly posting on an international online forum for knee replacement patients throughout my recovery was enlightening. My own experience, operation, level of medication, care and recovery were totally different from many that posted on there. My experience was so positive - many others much less so. I knew I had access to my consultant and had faith in his ability. I never felt ignored or insignificant, there was no drama, no smoke and mirrors, total transparency and a steady, progressively improving recovery. I was yet again 100% thankful for the choices I had made. Now 14 months on, friends and family are astounded at the difference in my life and attitude. After 28 years of having to excuse myself because my knee was painful, I hardly think of it at all now and have far exceeded Mr Fairbank's expectations of outcome. I have already recommended Adrian Fairbank and Parkside Hospital many times, and will continue to do so without reservation.
