On the occasion of a (belated) eye test the optician identified Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD) - i am age 90. She suggested I should consult an opthalmic surgeon and, following the excellent experience of our family with the 'Royal Eye Unit' at Kingston Hospital over the years, I contacted Miss Sivagnanavel who gave my an appointment at her next bi-weekly clinic for 6 p.m. At 6 p.m. 'on the dot' her nurse was waiting for me to put drops into my eyes and give me a thorough preliminary examination. Miss Sivignanavel then gave me a more detailed examination and diagnosed 'dry' AMD, particularly in the right eye. She explained the nature of the condition and the prognosis. She stresed the importance of checking regularly e.g. with an Amsler grid and assured me that she would see me immediately should I notice any change in the condition. She advised me regarding diet and food supplements and backed this up by giving me a copy of the Macular Society Guide to AMD. Miss Sivignanavel was unhurried and the epitome of kindness throughout the consultation. She gave me great confidence that I could live with the condition and would be able to rely on her help should I need it at any time in the future.
