Everyone said the same – from NHS workers past and present to those who had been fortunate to have had her as their surgeon – Miss Patel is the best. So from the start, I was filled with confidence that all would be well. Miss Patel explained exactly what needed to be done and why but she recognised that I was very unfit so she set about increasing my fitness levels. Four months later, my blood sugars had halved (I’m diabetic), my breathing had improved (I’m asthmatic), and I had lost weight through walking 3 miles a day and changing my diet and attitude towards food. At 72, I’ve not been this fit and healthy for years. Throughout it all, although Miss Patel was strict with me in getting fit, she treated me with respect and dignity and was as happy as I that I reached this level of fitness. The operation has been a success. The staff in ICU and PPU were very attentive and took on board all of the directives that Miss Patel gave them on her daily ward rounds. The staff themselves knew that everything had to be done ‘to the letter’ for Miss Patel for whom they had great respect. Again, that filled me with confidence and I can’t thank them enough. I’m now on the road to recovery and the great side effect is the renewed respect Miss Patel has given me for my body, and I will continue to keep it healthy and fit. Thank you to a great lady and her team.
