I requested an out-of-hours emergency phone consultation regarding severe post-operative pain, and was phoned by Dr Datta. She prescribed some pain relief, and I was grateful. The next morning, I received an unsolicited phone call from Dr Datta. She said she'd reflected on my case and was concerned that I might have a deep vein thrombosis (DVT) or pulmonary embolism (PE), both of which are blood clots that can be extremely dangerous. She advised me to go to hospital immediately. Within an hour of arriving in hospital, a pulmonary embolism was diagnosed, which the consultant believed had originated as a deep vein thrombosis in my thigh before detaching and lodging in my lung. This was immediately treated with blood thinners and I was kept under observation for 3 days and had a number of tests to determine what damage the PE had caused. I had not considered the possibility of a DVT or PE and nor had any of the various doctors I had seen in the weeks prior to the event. As the symptoms match other conditions which I assumed I had, it's fair to say that Dr Datta probably saved my life. Furthermore, even in cases where PE has been detected and treated, there is usually residual damage to the heart. My tests showed no damage whatsoever, and it can be said with some certainty that Dr Datta's early intervention is what prevented the PE from leaving damage in its wake. The debt of gratitude I owe to this excellent doctor is immeasurable, and I am confident I won't be her only patient this applies to. A great career in senior general practice is ahead of Dr Datta, and if as a patient you get to be treated by her, you will be a very lucky patient indeed.
