I took my elderly and frail mother to see Dr Lapa yesterday, and hoped to discuss 4 issues. In my opinion, none needed much time to discuss as they are all things the surgery and our family have dealt with on more than one occasion in the last couple of years. I found Dr Lapa to be really helpful. He agreed to our request in relation to 1 issue, and we quickly agreed plans in relation to the other 3 issues. Having explained that mum had recently received interventions from paramedics and the urgent community response team for a UTI, antibiotics were prescribed in case mum shows signs of a UTI in future. This was much appreciated. He took time to ask about 1 of her conditions and how she was getting on with the medication. We agreed to amend the time of day she's prompted to take it and, if that helps with morning time drowsiness (lowers the risk of falls), we can look at increasing the dosage. Topical cream was put on repeat prescription for symptoms he believes mum will continue to experience, so that was helpful too. Dr Lapa took time to reassure mum that she is not on nearly as much medication as some people her age. This is clearly a concern for her. Finally, I appreciated him taking time to listen to our request to change the format of an adhesive remover from spray bottles to wipes as mum does not have the strength to operate spray bottles easily. He actioned this and this reassured me that she will have the option to manage her own stoma bag changes going forward, rather than rely on carers to do every bag change.
