I don't believe Dr. Showman has much empathy for 'unseen' illness or psychological pain. I was left feeling ashamed and as though I was a naughty child after having the audacity to press for a short term medication to help me adjust to a new life circumstance, rather than the long term daily option which she favoured (despite its past inefficacy). I believe she is very much "by the book" and inflexible in her approach. Perhaps this was unintentional but unfortunately her tone was passive-aggressive. I don't think she intends to invalidate or demean and quite likely she believes she has the best interests of the patient at heart. If only she were more able to adopt the perspective of those struggling psychologically (even if they present well), then I think she would be an excellent GP. After the experience I had, I will not be seeing this GP again. I saw a private GP instead, explained my circumstances and history, was listened to and understood and treated like a responsible adult. I was provided a short-term low-dose prescription which has been used very sparingly as needed. I don't understand why Dr. Showman could not have done the same.
