Share review of Dr Sandeep Dahiya
Dr Dahiya has given me life enhancing care and advice. Seven years ago I had the the start of osteo-arthritis in two fingers in both hands and in several toes. Everyday use like driving, cooking and walking were painful and awkward. Dr Dahiya prescribed pain relieving medication but said I could halt the advance of the condition through exercise. He prescribed going to the gym twice a week with a warm up routine of cycling or rowing followed by the weight machines. I could use light weights with many repetitions or heavy weights with few repetitions but, whatever I did, I was to finish every session tired so my muscles ached the next day - and the effects have been miraculous. My toes stopped aching and the pain never returned. The swelling on the finger joints stopped increasing and I can now straighten my fingers so that everyday jobs are easily accomplished and are not painful. I know it’s down to the exercise because on the rare occasions I haven’t been able to go to the gym for some 7-10 days my fingers start aching again despite the daily medication. I’ve lost a stone in weight, gained muscles I haven’t seen for 40 years and feel good for my 76 years.
Dr Dahiya has a friendly professional approach with a real talent for explaining medical terms in using everyday language eg describing statins as akin to Calgon in a washing machine to keep the pipes clean is a great example.
The theory behind the effects of exercise is very plausible - the micro-tears in the muscles caused by the exercise provoke the body to produce stems cells and this response helps repair damaged joints as well as muscles.
I cannot recommend Dr Dahiya’s advice to take weight bearing exercise highly enough to anyone who has osteo-arthritis.
