When I was referred to St. Paul's Medical Centre, at Warwick Square and received a letter to ring the Eye Centre Manager for an appointment I was pleasantly surprised at how quickly the referral had gone through. I had to leave my details with the receptionist and they said an appointment would be sent out. The appointment arrived the day before I was due to see Dr. Ross which was at 11.10 a.m. on a Wednesday and was at Arnside House. I tried to ring and see if I could make another appointment, but I could not get through after holding on the phone for 20 minutes, so decided to keep the appointment. After waiting 10 minutes I was called in to see Dr. Ross who was very pleasant and explained that I had blepharitis which is inflammation of the eyelids when the tear ducts become blocked. He explained that I could have an incision on the inside of the eyelid which would release the fluid or that bathing the eye with a hot compress for 10 minutes a day would help to unblock tear ducts. After he explained this I opted to go for the non surgical route and was rather relieved. He also explained that this condition is long lasting and if after 3 months there was no improvement after keeping up with the hot compresses then I could always opt for surgery. I was given a leaflet on blepharitis which was very informative and left feeling reasonably re-assured although Dr. Ross said I could get eye drops on prescription and would write to my GP. I would have preferred to have been given the option of going somewhere more central like St. Paul's Medical Centre or the Cumberland Infirmary for my appointment as Arnside House is the other end of town for me.
