I agree with the above comment. I have heard of several of us who have left his consultation with a very quick functional diagnosis without first having excluded other options. If somebody does have a functional disorder, it can have a massive effect on their lives and they should be offered help and advice to overcome it, not just reassurance that everything is fine, because clearly there is some mechanism that is not at all fine and seriously effects their lives. For the many of us misdiagnosed with a functional disorder, it is a very damaging misdiagnosis as the actual serious condition is then not treated and we can then feel very wary about seeking future help and not get appropriate medical support because that label follows us. I expect it is not just Dr Worth who uses this diagnosis too frequently, rather it is the 'go to' easy diagnosis when a neurologist doesn't understand or can't see what is happening. The mental and physical impact on both people with genuine functional disorders (who need to have it explained why it is happening and what they can do to improve it) and those of us with other diseases (who need the disease quickly diagnosed/treated and not obscured by a misdiagnosis) is huge - life threatening in some cases. However, I am sure if someone presented with a clear cut neurological disease within his field he would be very good.

Response from Dr Paul Worth

I am very sorry to hear that you were dissatisfied with the consultation and that my diagnosis may have been incorrect. We can all make mistakes and I am keen to learn if this is the case. I would be keen to try to help put things right for you. Please feel free to make contact with me at Addenbrooke’s hospital via my secretary on 01223 216760 if you feel this would be helpful.
