Dr Oswald Jack was the first neurologist who could explain my condition and the symptoms that I was experiencing. The first appointment I had with him was a revelation. His in-depth knowledge of my conditions (narcolepsy & cataplexy) are truly encyclopaedic. I learned more in that hour than I had with previous multiple doctors and dozens of appointments. My experience at QEII Neurological Dept hasn’t been without problems though. The waiting area is woefully inadequate and staff had failed to confirm my presence to the consultant four or five times. This left me unconscious in the waiting area with nobody knowing that I was there until regaining consciousness. On one occasion making me miss my appointment and causing Dr Jack to be recalled to the department to see me after his surgery had ended, something he did even though he had to rearrange his days diary. My only advice when seeing Dr Jack would be to tell him when you don’t understand the medical terms he may use. He’s obviously a highly intelligent individual who’s vocabulary is beyond most of us. I had to ask him to explain things in a way I could understand at times which he was more than happy to do without making me feel like an idiot.
