At 40 years old, I've been fortunate in managing to avoid the attentions of the medical establishment, up until the point that Dr Shearman became the first specialist I'd ever been referred to. Although a gastroenterologist rather than a psychologist, he recognised immediately that my physical problem was significantly compounded by its associated anxiety. He did this while treating both aspects with the same level of consideration. What made him stand out for me was his patience and efforts that went beyond his specific field of expertise. He never made me feel like I was taking his time and he genuinely listened. In particular, he made time to explain everything thoroughly, and put energy into acknowledging the contribution that anxiety made in worsening my symptoms. He is, without any hesitation, the best doctor I've ever had any interaction with, and it's difficult to imagine how he could have been any better.
