Since being diagnosed with limited scleroderma & Raynaud’s over ten years ago, I attend Kingston hospital for bi-annual appointments. Seeing the same person twice is an extreme rarity – therefore, I have seen a great number of doctors. Dr Al-Shakarchi worked her way through my history to create a full outline of any major issues, before asking about any changes, or concerns that I had – putting them in context. In all of these years I have never been given such clear information about any of the conditions that I have. As I seemed unclear about some of the information that was new to me, she explained everything, ironing out some misconceptions, showing me images & guiding me to sources of further information & support. She organised blood, heart & pulmonary function tests & spoke to me about immediate care & longer term options. It was an unhurried appointment, where I felt listened to & valued, all approached with a mixture of interest, concern & where appropriate humour (always good to lighten the atmosphere & put people at their ease). I left so much better informed & able to manage my situation. I now feel more confident & positive about taking back control of my health.
