Mr Armstrong and his team have replaced both of my base of thumb cartilages with “Cartiva” implants. Both operations and pre and post op care were exemplary, not just from Dan but from everyone from reception to nurses, porters and anaesthetist. In the operating theatre it was a very friendly atmosphere and everyone tried their best to keep me informed as the op progressed, and Dan showed me my open hand a couple of times during the operation. After a year, my dominant hand is around 80-90% of original pre arthritis strength but the arthritic pain has gone. Way, way stronger than it was pre-operation. A truly life changing operation, so many thanks!! For anyone considering the same operation, the thumb is usable for light tasks after 3 weeks but strength and range of movement take Months to recover. As a guide I could do buttons up after 8 weeks. The key difference post op, is that when the thumb is pushed too hard, the pain on movement lasts a couple of days then the thumb comes back stronger, rather than the waves of arthritic pain pre-op. In summary, a long road but so worth it!
