I recently broke my thumb playing hockey. I was hit very hard by the ball and the X-rays showed that the break was quite a bad/complicated one near the second joint. In the initial prognosis I was warned that because the break was at the joint and the number of small fragments (bit of a jigsaw), it may not be possible to return the thumb to its previous state and that there was a possibility of having to fuse the joint into a certain position. I had an operation to fix my thumb 2 weeks ago, which Dr Armstrong carried out. Its only early days, but so far I couldn't be more pleased! Prior to the operation Dr Armstrong and his assistant explained clearly what they were going to try to do and roughly how they would do it in terms I could easily understand. They answered all my questions and satisfied any concerns I had. After the operation, Dr Armstrong came round to explain how he'd thought it had gone and that he was personally pleased. He showed me the X-rays of the fix, which showed he'd done a great job of putting my jigsaw puzzle of a thumb back together and that the joint should still work nearly as well as it did before. I don't think I'll be risking playing hockey again, but I am extremely grateful to Dr Armstrong and he extended team or ensuring I can get back to doing everything else.
