I took my 8 week old daughter to see Dr Klein last Tuesday. I made her aware that my daughter was 9weeks 2days premature, and had a real bad cough & crackly chest. I told her that her cough was making her bring up every feed so I was worried that she was going to dehydrate herself. She told me she would prescribe her something to put in her milk. I waited all day for the prescription, when my dad went to collect it she had prescribed her gaviscon infant. Luckily, I read the instructions which clearly state twice not to give to premature babies. Something Dr Klein was aware that my daughter was very premature (still not at her due date). I rang the doctors and was put through to the pharmacist who advised me not to give this to my daughter and to ring back and speak to a doctor in the morning. This I did, however when I rang they could not give me a telephone consultation until the following day. My premature baby was not keeping her food down yet they were in no rush to help me. I ended up taking my daughter to the walk in and A&E. There she was admitted with bronchiolitis, and was hospitalised for 4 days. She needed oxygen and to be fed through a tube. When I asked the hospital if this could have been prevented if diagnosed sooner they advised she wouldn't have been as bad as she was. I think this is utterly poor practice which caused unnecessary added pain for my daughter. Not happy.

Response from Dr Bettina Kleine

Thank you for sharing your view on the website. I am sorry your daughter suffered a RSV infection and that her bronchiolitis required oxygen treatment. Unfortunately, I am not able to make a specific response to these comments on this public forum due to my duty of patient confidentiality. You might be aware that the NHS has a complaints procedure which allows patients or their representatives to voice concerns, and for NHS providers to carry out an investigation into the circumstances of a case. I have included the website details where you can access more information on this below. http://www.nhs.uk/choiceintheNHS/Rightsandpledges/complaints/Pages/NHScomplaints.aspx In order to trigger this procedure, you simply need to write a letter to our Practice Manager. I would then be able to provide a detailed analysis and response. Ideally I would also then be able to meet with you to talk about what happened, listen to your concerns and explain the Practice and my views. I am looking forward to hearing from you. Best regards Dr Bettina Kleine
