Dr Pawa was amazing! Having torn my distal bicep tendon, I needed fairly urgent surgery to repair the tear. To be honest, the prospect of having general anaesthesia terrified me. I was expecting it to be an ordeal whereby I was fighting against something which had complete control over me, forcing my body into a state it was not meant to be in. In addition, the thought of not waking up also played on my mind too. Before the operation, Dr. Pawa came to talk to me about the anaesthetic. He also discussed administering a nerve block, a specialty of his, to alleviate post-op pain and the necessity to pump me full of drugs that potentially would have made me feel lousy. Having run through the risks involved and weighing up the pros and cons I opted to have the block administered and feel I definitely made the right choice. Post-op pain was minimal as a result and I took the pain medication prescribed merely as a precautionary measure. Dr. Pawa had a very kind and caring manner from the start. He recognised my fear and made me feel at ease. ( At the end of the day I am a 35-year-old grown man who already felt ashamed and embarrassed presenting myself in such a petrified fashion so having someone with the ability to demonstrate compassion and understanding ensured minimal damage to my somewhat damaged ego!) What I also appreciated was his honesty and matter-of-fact approach. He informed me of all my options and talked me through the procedure. At no point did I feel pressured into something I wasn't happy with. I am uncertain as to whether this is standard practice, but what I also liked was the fact that the anaesthetic was administered in a separate room to the operating room. I was dreading walking into an operating theatre, seeing a crowd of surgeons dressed in their gowns, sharp knives, and bright lights. Upon entering the room Dr. Pawa and his assistant administered a pre-med to calm my nerves and asked me some questions about myself. He was very subtle in administering the anaesthetic as I never actually recall him doing so. We began a conversation about my training regime, I felt a little pressure in my right hand then all I remember is opening my eyes and him standing next to me to check I was feeling well following the procedure. No dizziness, no fighting the drug, no falling into black holes whilst counting backwards from 10! Upon waking up, I had no pain, I didn't feel groggy, I didn't blurt out any profanities ( as far as I can recall!) I was ready for a meal, drink and ready to go home. In short, I felt like I had had a good night’s sleep. I do not want to go through the experience again if I am honest for obvious reasons, however, if I had to have surgery again I would pull out all the stops to ensure that Dr. Pawa performed the anaesthesia, be it general or local. Both himself and my surgeon Miss Claire Fitzgerald worked hard to fix me and although I am still a way off full recovery, they both did a great job of setting the ball rolling with my surgery to ensure that eventually I will return to full strength. Thank you. With much appreciation and warm regards, Paul Ross
