We had an ultrasound scheduled as our midwife was concerned the baby may be too large. At the ultrasound with Brett, nothing was mentioned about the babies size but he did tell us that our baby had microcephaly. When I questioned what this was he referred to the Zika virus and told us our son would be anything from mildly to majorly disabled. His bedside manner was appalling; there was no empathy and the way in which it was delivered was entirely inappropriate. When we questioned the diagnosis as what he was saying didn’t make sense he went into further detail about the extent of disability. When I asked my options he was unwilling to advise or discuss further. It is not within a Sonographers remit to diagnose extremely serious conditions, and where it within their remit it should be handled in a much more sensitive and appropriate way. We were referred to a Specialist at Addenbrook in Cambridge and as it turns out our son does not have Microcephaly, but rather a slightly misshapen skull.. a far cry from what Brett Hydes tried to tell us. The specialist at Cambridge advised us she could see no reason from the scan that Brett had done why he would make such outlandish claims. Absolutely appalling service from Brett. I genuinely do not believe this man should be working in the NHS. I was 36 weeks at the time and genuinely could have walked out of the hospital and jumped off a bridge. We were left absolutely devastated. The consequences could have been much worse.
