Ken always listens, he is never judgmental if I have done something stupid or asked a silly question, which means I always feel I can ask if I don't understand something. He shows that he cares what happens to me. He doesn't just do his job and walk away, he is totally committed to it. He sees sights which most of us would show a shocked reaction to but he doesn't and so the patient isn't embarrassed by how they look. When one is vulnerable one needs someone or something to hold onto that they can trust and that will always be there for them......that is Ken......he has seen me at my worst and hopefully now at my best. However when I heard recently he was retiring next year I realised that Ken had become a lifeline to me and was scared what would happen after that. The NHS needs to value Macmillan nurses like Ken because they don't boast about what they do but they are vital to the patients they deal with.
